Monday Night Football will be a match-up between two teams who love to air the ball out: the Green Bay Packers and the Philadelphia Eagles. Donovan McNabb and company will play host to Brett Favre on what is likely to be his farewell tour.
The Packers started off the season by getting shellacked to the Chicago Bears 26-0. However, in the previous two weeks Brett Favre and the Packers’ offense has been averaging 29 points per game as Favre seems to be once again one of the best playmakers in the league. Green Bay lost in a shootout to Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints in week two, but as we saw on Monday Night Football, there is no shame in losing to the Saints. The Packers came back last week to defeat the Detroit Lions and avoid being in the basement of the NFC North. What we have learned is that the Packers are progressively improving each week and that it seems as though Brett Favre still does have some gas left in the tank after all. Favre has been spreading the ball around nicely to his reliable veteran receiver Donald Driver and newly found Greg Jennings, who has 10 catches and a touchdown through three weeks. However, in order to be successful Monday night, the Packers will need to get Ahman Green involved in order to slow down the relentless Eagles pass rush.
The Philadelphia Eagles come into this game with one of the best offenses in the NFL. Philly has a 2-1 record behind outstanding play from quarterback Donovan McNabb and running back Brian Westbrook. McNabb’s favorite target so far this year has been newly acquired Donte’ Stallworth, who has 11 catches for over 200 yards and 2 touchdowns in the two games that he has played in. Stallworth missed last week due to injury, and the Eagles didn’t miss a beat, as Brian Westbrook had one of the best games in his NFL career. McNabb is averaging 320 yards per game through the air and has thrown for 7 touchdowns while only throwing 1 interception. The Eagles will try to do more of the same Monday night against the Packers secondary
The key to this game will be which defense can make the big play. Both teams love to throw the ball all over the field, so this one will most likely be a shootout. And while the Eagles secondary is a little banged up, they still have a much stronger defense than the Packers. Philadelphia’s front seven can get after the passer as well as any team in the league. And while Brett Favre makes many extraordinary plays when improvising, he also throws interceptions when he gets pressured. If Philadelphia can continue to get after the passer like they have been in the first three weeks, they will win handily. However, if the Packers offense can come up with a few big plays early and make this a sixty minute football game, they have the offensive playmakers to pull this one out. Regardless of who wins this game, however, we are sure to see outstanding quarterback play and big plays all night.
