Player preview and rookie information on the number 17 pick of all the 2008 NFL Football selections in this year's draft class, Gosder Cherilus, a dominant offensive guard out of Boston College University |
2008 #17 Pick:
Detroit Lions -
Gosder Cherilus (OG, Boston College)
Gosder Cherilus out of Boston College is a 6’7, 320lbs offensive tackle. He appears to have good footwork, and good enough speed to be an excellent open field blocker. Being picked by the Lions, scouts project Cherilus to start immediately. At Boston College, Cherilus started 37 straight games at right tackle, and then was moved to the left tackle position. He holds a school record for starting in 51 straight games. In his two seasons, he was able to record 156 knockdown blocks along with 22 touchdown resulting blocks. At Sommerville High School in Mass., he was able to play on offense and defense. He was named to the 2002 All American team, and also garnered all state accolades in Massachsetts. During high school Gosder participated in both basketball, as a power forward/center, and also threw shot-put for the track team. Cherilus sometimes shows lack of technique, which could come back to haunt him in the professional game. During college, Gosder was penalized a little too much. The Lions need to show some patience with this kid. If they do, they should be very pleased the results of this pick.
