Number 7 Pick: New Orleans Saints – Sedrick Ellis (DT, USC)
The Saints wanted the #7 pick and they got it. They got their man, Sedrick Ellis before the Bengals could snatch him at the #9 position. Ellis, a 6’1, 305 tackle out of USC is an extremely powerful player. He has great quickness for a big guy, which should benefit him in the NFL.
At USC, Sedrick was named an All American, and also All Pac 10 first team as a senior. He was also chosen as a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award, which awards the top defensive player. Ellis was also named the Pac 10 Defensive player of the year. During his senior season he compiled 58 tackles(29 solo), and had 8.5 sacks, batted 7 passes and recovered two fumbles. In his entire career at USC, he played in 48 games, starting 36 of them. He registered 144 tackles(74 solo) and 17.5 sacks for a total of –130 yards.
In High School, at Chino High School, in California Ellis was named an All American plus numerous other prestigious honors. As a senior offensive and defensive lineman Ellis recorded 122 tackles(35 solo), 6.5 sacks, a blocked punt, forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Throughout High School he also participated in track.
One knock on Ellis in college was his technique. Experts feel with his lack of technique, he will have some difficulties in the NFL. With coaching, this is one thing Ellis will have shored up in no time.
