With the sixth overall pick of the 2009 draft the Cincinnati Bengals chose the 6’4”, 332 lbs. offensive tackle out of the University of Alabama. The Cincinnati Bengals need to make an impact after a number of sub par years. They are hoping Andre Smith can open up the running game for them to add more dimension to their offense. Smith is definitely one of the best tackles coming out of college.
Andre Smith dominated during his time at Alabama, taking home the Outland Trophy in 2008. He started a total of 38 games for Alabama, starting as a true freshman. He led the team on the field in 831 offensive plays that year. In his final year at Alabama, he gave out 103 knockdown blocks and led the blocking for 17 touchdowns.
Smith is a great defensive mind. He is able to read the oncoming rush and only allowed 1 sack his entire senior campaign. He is also a massive blocker with quick feet who can put a defender on the turf. He stayed healthy in his 3 years at Alabama.
Andre Smith’s biggest obstacle may be himself. He has had problems with mental discipline off the field and was suspended for the Sugar Bowl against Utah for violating team rules. He has also handled his agent decisions and the Pro Combine poorly. This is a definite concern for Cincinnati, a team that has a knack for trouble players and lack of discipline.
