The SEC is always one of the roughest conferences to try to handicap, as the National Champions usually end up coming from this conference. This year, could we be saying the same thing? The favorites to take down the conference crown are the Alabama Crimson Tide (Current SEC Odds: 2.05 to 1 at 5Dimes Sportsbook). The Tide are losing a ton from last year’s offense, but when you look past the fact that QB Greg McIlroy, WR Julio Jones, and RB Mark Ingram are gone, you see that there is still a heck of a lot of talent coming back for Head Coach Nick Saban. It’s not like Saban hasn’t been able to figure out how to recruit in the past and then get the most out of what he brought into town. QB AJ McCarron should be fine, and so should the Alabama ‘D’. The biggest problem game on the slate is at home, a date with LSU.

Speaking of the LSU Tigers (2011 SEC Lines: 4.75 to 1 at 5Dimes Sportsbook), they’re the next in a hoard of teams in the conference that are lined in the +475ish range to win this conference crown. We know that it is likely going to take a win against Alabama on the road to win the SEC, something that definitely won’t come easily. We’ll find out quite a bit right away this year when the Bayou Bengals take on the Oregon Ducks at Dallas Cowboys Stadium, and it’ll be clear if QB Jordan Jefferson and company can’t keep up with the Quack Attack, they won’t be able to win this conference either.

The team that really could be there for the watching this season is the Georgia Bulldogs (Current SEC Odds: 4.75 to 1 at 5Dimes Sportsbook). We don’t really think that Head Coach Mark Richt and company have assembled the best team in the SEC East this season, but we don’t think that there is another team out there that can say that they have as easy of a road as UGA does. This is the year that the team gets the extra conference home game thanks to the fact that the annual Cocktail Party against Florida was originally slated as a road game, and to top it all off, both Alabama and LSU are dodged on the slate. Whereas South Carolina, another one of the favorites in the SEC East doesn’t get a real good look at some heavy duty competition until these two teams meet “Between the Hedges” in Week 2, Georgia gets to start off with a stern test against Boise State. With a lot on the line for Richt and the growth of QB Aaron Murray expected in his sophomore season, we wouldn’t be shocked to see the Dawgs right there when it’s said and done with playing for the SEC title.

This is going to be the toughest test of the year for the LSU offense and the LSU defense. No, the Oregon defense isn’t the greatest on the planet, but it definitely is a unit that has an easier job than most thanks to this offense. QB Jordan Jefferson really hasn’t played all that well in his career, but in this case, he knows that he is probably going to have to account for at least three or four TDs for his team to even have a shot. Sure, the Bayou Bengals will have the advantage of having to travel just a few hours instead of halfway across the country to get to this one, but this should be a fairly bi-partisan crowd. The only advantage comes on the defensive side of the ball, where Head Coach Les Miles has been working all Spring and Summer long trying to figure out how to slow down what the Ducks are going to be bringing their way in this primetime showdown.

Oregon, on the other hand, is going to try to make sure that it doesn’t end up getting into the same situation in this game that it did the last time that it played a team from the SEC West. The Auburn Tigers were able to relatively silence this potent offense, but we have to remember that that came after a long, long layoff thanks to the time lapse between the last game of the regular season and the BCS National Championship Game. One might think that the time off might be an issue this year as well, but QB Darron Thomas and RB LaMichael James were off and running last season at the outset, and we see no reason why that can’t continue this year, starting off in less than two weeks’ time against the high flying LSU defense.

The Big 10 (err… Big 12?) definitely has a new look to it this season with the addition of the Cornhuskers into the fold. But will they be able to make the big time impact that everyone is looking for in this conference? Nebraska thinks that it can be a National Championship contender this year, but it is clear that this is the biggest test on the slate. Remember that this could be the first of two meetings against Wisky on the season, as there is a very possible date for these two in the first Big 10 Championship Game as well. QB Taylor Martinez did great against the Washington Huskies in the first go around of those two teams last season, but when push came to shove, U-Dub got the best of him and the Huskers in the Holiday Bowl. Cause for concern? Head Coach Bo Pelini is going to hope that a defense that ranked No. 10 in the nation last year at 308.2 yards per game can keep things going in spite of the fact that over the last two seasons, the team has lost some absolute studs on this side of the ball in DT Ndamukong Suh and DB Prince Amukamara.

The Badgers are going to look a whole heck of a lot like they did last year. We know that RB John Clay is no longer in the fold, but the two men that shined last season in his absence, RB Montee Ball and RB James White are still here in Madison. Those three helped Wisconsin to the No. 11 rushing offense in the land at 247.1 yards per game, and they did so without the use of a mobile quarterback bolstering the yardage totals. This year, QB Russell Wilson at least brings a level of athleticism to the fold, but he also gives Head Coach Bret Bielema the best signal caller that he has had in his short time at Wisconsin since taking over for the famed Barry Alvarez. This is going to be the fifth straight home game to start the season, and if Wisconsin can get past this one, it should be a Top 5 team in the nation and be 6-0 going into games against Michigan State and Ohio State on the road in back to back weeks.

It was definitely an interesting week of football on the Week 1 NFLX lines, as there were a number of big time blow outs, something that is not characteristic this early in the year. The New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers posted two of the biggest blowouts, winning games by 35 and 25 points respectively and posting dominating outings on both sides of the ball. QB Tom Brady didn’t suit for the Pats last week, nor did most of his first team offensive friends. Tampa Bay is at home on Thursday though, and that is good enough for the oddsmakers to make it a 2.5 point favorite.

A dozen home teams won last week, and this week, there are a slew of hosts that are favorites on the NFL Week 2 lines. This week, there are four teams that are favored by at least six points at home, including the Green Bay Packers (vs. the Arizona Cardinals), Baltimore Ravens (vs. the Kansas City Chiefs), Miami Dolphins (vs. the Carolina Panthers), and the New York Jets (vs. the Cincinnati Bengals).

Once again this week, there is only one team that is favored on the road. Last week, the Bucs pulled off a 25-0 romp over the Chiefs as we mentioned before as road favorites, and this week, the NFL odds are calling for a big win for the Washington Redskins over the Indianapolis Colts. Without QB Peyton Manning taking snaps, Indy was destroyed last week by the up and coming St. Louis Rams 33-10, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see similar this week, especially with Washington coming off of that 16-7 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the home opener.

‘Totals’ are all across the board this week as well. The lowest number of the bunch is the 32.5 on the board between the Chiefs and the Baltimore Ravens. These two offenses combined for just two field goals in Week 1 of the preseason, and both field goals were scored by Baltimore. Now, both head coaches are going to try to get their acts together and get some TDs on the board. This might seem like an overreaction by the oddsmakers, but they kept the ‘totals’ in both of their first two preseason games relatively low as well, so this low of a number isn’t a surprise.

The highest ‘total’ is the 37.5 between the Pack and the Cardinals. Arizona’s first team offense struggled against the Oakland Raiders last week, but in the end, the team was good for 24 points. Green Bay had the exact opposite problem, putting up 17 points with the first teamers on the field and scoring absolutely nothing with the second team out there. The key is that both of these defenses are coming off of bad weeks in which they allowed teams to score in the mid-20s, which is why this ‘total’ is so much higher than most of the rest.

There is a nationally televised game every single night this week in the preseason NFL betting action. The Philadelphia Eagles are three point underdogs to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the battle of Pennsylvania on Thursday night on Fox. On Friday, Fox has a southern style showdown between the Atlanta Falcons and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jags are three point favorites. The NFL Network is going to showcase Saturday’s Houston Texans as 1.5 point favorites at home against the New Orleans Saints. Sunday Night Football on NBC debuts this week with the Dallas Cowboys at -1 on the NFL Week 2 odds against the San Diego Chargers. Things wrap up on Monday Night Football with the duel in the Meadowlands between the Chicago Bears and the New York Giants, where the hosts are 4.5 point favorites.

The Hogs and the Razorbacks seemingly always put on a great show, and it never seems to matter what the records are between the two. Upsets happen in this series all the time, but this year, the winner of this one might be well on their way to the SEC Championship Game, while the loser is likely going to end up in a situation where it has no chance to get into the BCS.

The Hogs really got some bad news this week when they learned that RB Knile Davis was likely out for the season. If he doesn’t end up playing in this one, it could be a rough go for the Razorbacks. Davis accounted for 1,322 rushing yards and 13 scores last season, and he averaged 6.5 yards per carry. WE just don’t have the confidence that QB Tyler Wilson is going to be able to get the job done. If Ryan Mallett were still here in Fayetteville, we’d feel a lot different. The Arkansas defense under Head Coach Bobby Petrino definitely has a lot of work to do, though this should be a much easier challenge than most others will be in the SEC.

The Bayou Bengals have just a heard of potential tripping points this year on the schedule, but this is the last building block towards an SEC title. The Hogs have done their share of keeping LSU out of the SEC Championship Game and the National Championship Game in recent years, and Head Coach Les Miles and company hope to avoid a similar fate this season. The trouble is going to come with an offense that was only able to put up 23 points last year against a rather questionable Arkansas defense. QB Jordan Jefferson has yet another year under his belt, but he just hasn’t shown signs of improvement. If the ‘O’ doesn’t get more production than it did last year in Fayetteville, don’t think for one second that the Bayou Bengals are getting out of this one so easily.

After weeks and weeks of waiting, the NFL odds are finally out for the first week of the preseason, and we are just days away from kicking it off! All 32 teams will be in action from Thursday through Monday, and the games are going to be hot and heavy for sure.

There are going to be a ton of new faces and old faces in new places to get used to this week. In the City of Brotherly Love, Head Coach Andy Reid will debut his brand spanking new secondary for the Philadelphia Eagles on the first night of football games in 2011, complete with Asante Samuel, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, and Nnamdi Asomugha. The Eagles will take on a Baltimore Ravens team which is going to try to figure out how to bolster its depth behind QB Joe Flacco in its exhibitions. The Eagles are three point home favorites.

These aren’t nearly the only home favorites around the 3-4 point range. In fact, 11 of the 16 home teams are favored by between 2.5 and 4.5 points on the Week 1 preseason NFL odds.

The biggest underdogs on the board are, to no surprise, the Indianapolis Colts. It has been seemingly forever since they have had a winning preseason, and we know that we are going to see very little of QB Peyton Manning. The St. Louis Rams are really an up and coming team and are still getting used to the idea of QB Sam Bradford being the face of the franchise. After beating the New England Patriots last year in Foxboro in the preseason, the Rams are seven point favorites on Saturday night.

There are going to be a ton of starting quarterbacks and potential starting rookies that are making debuts this week as well. The Jacksonville Jaguars will showcase Blaine Gabbert, the Cincinnati Bengals could be starting Andy Dalton, the San Francisco 49ers will surely give some time to Colin Kaepernick, the Tennessee Titans will have Jake Locker on display, the Minnesota Vikings will trot out Christian Ponder, and most importantly, the Carolina Panthers will turn to their potential savior, the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, Cam Newton. Veterans that are going to be with new teams of note include the Vikes with Donovan McNabb, the Arizona Cardinals with Kevin Kolb, the Washington Redskins with John Beck, and the Seattle Seahawks with Tarvaris Jackson.

Totals, as always, as incredibly low on the preseason NFL Week 1 betting lines. The lowest ‘totals’ are the 32.5s in the Pittsburgh/Washington game and the Tampa Bay/Kansas City game, while the highest is 35.5 in several different games.

Most of the moneyline prices are close as well. Save for the Rams and Colts, there are no favorites that are greater than -175 and no underdogs greater than +155.

There are also just two road favorites on the board on the Week 1 NFLX odds. The Green Bay Packers are two point favorites over the Cleveland Browns, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are favored by a point over the Kansas City Chiefs.

The week wraps up with Monday Night Football with the Houston Texans rolling out their new 3-4 defensive scheme against the New York Jets and their vaunted defense.

It’s going to be a mighty interesting season this year in the Pac-12, knowing that there are two legitimate National Championship contenders, an up and coming newcomer, a dark horse club, and the USC Trojans, who are ineligible for the conference title. We’ll start at the top with the Oregon Ducks (Current Pac 12 Odds: 2.30 to 1 at 5Dimes Sportsbook). The Quack Attack came up just shy of the National Championship last season, losing out at the death to the Auburn Tigers. Now, QB Darron Thomas, RB LaMichael James, and a ton of others are coming back from a team that used to routinely drop 50+ points on opponents.

There’s only one problem this year. Whereas last year, the Stanford Cardinal (2011 Pac 12 Lines: 3 to 1 at 5Dimes Sportsbook) came to Autzen Stadium, this year, the U of O has to make the trip down to “The Farm.” Considering the fact that these two share the same side of the newly formed Pac-12, it is clear that the game between the two of them is going to be for a spot in the conference championship game, knowing that neither one is likely to end up getting beaten by two other teams in conference play. QB Andrew Luck is the real deal, and had he come out of school last year, he’d have $22M in the bank and would be the starting QB for the Carolina Panthers this upcoming season. In all likelihood, Luck will once again be Top 5 NFL Draft material, and he and RB Stepfan Taylor have a great chance of leading the Cardinal to the Pac-12 crown.

There are 20 returning starters and 53 returning lettermen to this year’s Arizona State Sun Devils (Current Pac 12 Odds: 5.50 to 1 at 5Dimes Sportsbook) team, which definitely makes it the up and coming team in this conference. Head Coach Dennis Erickson has promised that this is the year that ASU gets it all figured out. QB Brock Osweiler has high hopes after leading this offense to 427.1 yards per game last season. We just don’t know if this team is surviving a road test at the new kids on the block, the Utah Utes, especially knowing that the road trip to Oregon is on tap the next week. The rest of the big boys are coming to Tempe though, and Stanford is dodged, so getting to the Pac-12 Championship Game is definitely not out of the question.
