Zozo Championship Defending Champ: First Ever
TV Coverage: Golf Channel @ 1pm (EST)

The PGA Tour’s first ever Zozo Championship will take place this weekend (October 24-27, 2019) at Accordia Narashino Country Club in Chiba, Japan.

Up for grabs is 10 million dollars in total prize money, with 500 FedEx Cup points & 1.75 million going to the winner.  This will certainly have the U.S. tour stars firing up their NetJets to make the trip around the world. This FedEx Cup qualifying event will bring out all of golf’s big names, making for a very exciting golf tournament.

The star-studded Zozo Championship field includes big names such as (current best available odds listed); Justin Thomas (Odds To Win: 7.4 to 1 at MyBookie), Rory McIlroy (Odds to Win: 8 to 1 at MyBookie), Jordan Spieth (Odds to Win: 25 to 1 at MyBookie), & Patrick Reed (Odds To Win: 33 to 1 at 5 Dimes)

Yes, that big name field also includes “The Big Cat” who is fresh off knee surgery.  The best available for Tiger Woods to win the Zozo Championship: 33 to 1 (at 5 Dimes)

You can catch the Zozo Championship on the Golf Channel all three days (Thurday through Sunday), starting at 1pm (EST) on Thursday-Friday & 1:30pm (EST) on Saturday-Sunday.

Zozo Championship Golf Picks
(Value Bets For This Weekend)

With this being a new event & a course that never hosted a PGA or WGC tour event, there’s not much to look at with regard to past performances at Accordia Narashino.  Therefore, I believe the best strategy is too look for players who are comfortable playing overseas, healthy enough to make the trip, and on the verge of winning in recent play.  First, Tiger Woods at 33 to 1 offers no value, especially with his recent surgery.  Additionally, I believe it’s best to generally avoid players with odds listed at 20 to 1 or worse, but I would especially avoid it in events like this.  With this being a crap-shoot, I believe it’s best to stay away from the biggest favorites.

Here’s three Zozo Championship picks that I believe offer solid value:

Xander Schauffele – Odds: 22 to 1 at MyBookie) – Xander finished second overall this year in the 2019 FedExCup & I fully expect him to compete again in 2020.  He’s well rested since his last two events where he finished 2nd overall (Tour Championship) & played outstanding in European Open in September.  He always seems to play big when the field is strong & he’s comfortable traveling the globe to play events internationally.  22 to 1 is a great value.

Tony Finau – Odds: 28 to 1 at 5 Dimes) – Tony is fresh off an outstanding top 10 performance at the Shriners.  He’s currently 13th in the world & it felt like he was on the verge of breaking through in 2019 with six top 10’s & twelve top 25 finishes.  The long hitting youngster just couldn’t close one out.  2020 could be the year that Finau breaks through & finally starts winning some tournaments.  With a week off since the Shriners, this could be the perfect chance to get a big payout on him.  Once Finau wins one, you won’t see anything better than 20 to 1 on him next year.

Victor Hovland – Odds: 30 to 1 at 5 Dimes) – As a rookie, Hovland exploded onto the tour scene in 2019 with a great performance in the Masters.  He followed it up with a top 15 finish in the U.S. open.  The 22-year old Norwegian rookie just seemed to play better as the 2019 season progressed.  He closed out the 2019 season with a top 5 finish at the Wyndham Championship.  He’s already played in two events this year including a top 10 finish in the Military Tribute at Greenbrier.  Hovland is another possible breakout player in 2020.  30 to 1 or better on Hovland as a bargain in almost any event, much more this type of crap-shoot.

st-andrews-2015As expected, the 21-year-old Texan, Jordan Speith (Odds: 6 to 1), is listed as the current favorite to win the 2015 Open Championship.   Jordan continues his quest for the holy grail of legendary golf: The true Grand Slam.  Speith was offered to the public at approximately 12 to 1 for the 2015 masters & 8 to 1 for the U.S. Open.  Turns out, these were tremendous values.  At most books his odds for the British jumped after Rory McIlroy’s withdraw due to an ruptured left ankle.  You can still get Jordan currently at 6 to 1 at 5 Dimes Sportsbook.

Free British Open Picks (Sleeper & Value Plays)
Jimmy Walker: (85 to 1 at Five Dimes)
Rickie Fowler (30 to 1 at JustBet Sportsbook)
Sergio Garcia (36 to 1 at  Five Dimes)
Graham DeLaet (385 to 1 at Five Dimes)
J.B. Holmes (95 to 1 at Five Dimes)

Other notables and their odds for the 2015 British Open include:

  • Bubba Watson (36 to 1) – Bubba didn’t fair so well in the U.S. Open, but it appeared Chambers Bay wasn’t best suited for his game, as next week he went on to win the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands.
  • J.B. Holmes (95 – 1) – We love J.B. this weekend and see 80 to 1 as a bargain.  He’s now ranked 13th in the world.  He now has 5 Top Ten finishes along with a win (at the Shell Houston Open) and two 2nd place finishes in his 24 events played.  The fact that he has played in almost every tournament this year (and made the cut in almost all of them) tells us something.  It shows that this big smasher of the golf ball is in great shape and ready for the trip across the pond.  If J.B. is going to win a major, this is the year he is going to do it.  95 to 1 is a super bargain with Holmes.
  • Rickie Fowler (25 to 1) – Nobody is more due to win a major than Rickie in our opinion.  He quietly finished second in 3 of 4 majors last year including a 2nd place finish at the British.  We like him to have a strong showing at St. Andrews.
  • Tiger Woods (30 to 1) – This is obviously a sell at 30 to 1 (at least it should be obvious).  He has not been able to put together a very strong weekend yet this year.  If you’re a Tiger fan, 30 to 1 odds may be temping, but you’d be betting with your heart instead of your brain.
  • Phil Mickelson (38 to 1) – It seems everyone is a Phil fan and every tournament is always more exciting when the big lefty is in the hunt.  However, believe it or not, Phil hasn’t won a tournament since 2013.  If you are looking for value, it’s probably best to pass on Phil Mickelson unless you can get more than 50 to 1 odds.

British Open Winners (Since 2000)
2014 – Rory McIlroy
2013 – Phil Mickelson

Q: When is the 2015 Masters?
A: Thursday, 4/9 to 4/12/2015

Q: Which TV network can I watch the event & what time will the 2015 Masters TV Coverage Air?
A: As usual, you can watch the masters on ESPN on Thursday and Friday.  Then, the coverage will switch to CBS on Saturday & Sunday.  DirectTV also has special dedicated channels (also available in a 4-screen split) for the Masters. This includes; Featured Group, Amen Corner, Network Coverage, and more.

Q: Who Was Last Year’s Masters Champion and What is his Current Odds?
Q: Who was Last Year’s Masters Runner Up
A: Bubba Watson (2015 Masters odds: 12-1) won the Masters in 2015 as one of the favorites.  Jordan Speith (2015 Masters Odds: 10-1) went into Sunday with the lead and was outplayed by Watson.

Q: Where will the 2015 Masters be held?
A: The Masters is always (every year) at Augusta National in Augusta, Georgia

Q: Who is Biggest Odds on Favorite to Win the 2014 Masters?
A. Most books have either the following three at the top and have this order (as of 4/1):

  1. Rory McIlroy (6 to 1 at JustBet)
  2. Joran Speith (10 to 1 at JustBet)
  3. Bubba Watson (11 to 1 at 5 Dimes)

Q: Where can I see the rest of the 2015 Masters odds and lists of odds from reliable sportsbooks?
A: Full list of odds for the 2014 Masters can be found at the bottom of this post, courtesy of JustBet; also find odds from 5 Dimes below. We’ll also update the lists below with the latest prices as often as possible. We’ll also try to add individual 2014 Masters Prop Bets as well as heads-up lines.

Q: What are some exciting storylines to watch in this year’s Masters?
A: The biggest story is of course, the return of the great Tiger Woods.  After taking some time off, Woods will return to golf and test his game in the biggest tournament of them all.  Tiger Woods’ current odds to win the 2015 Masters is 38 to 1 (at 5 Dimes).  This seems to be on the high end (better payout than other books).  Most books will offer him at around 25 to 1.

Another great story is Jordan Speith.  He has been red hot and everyone is waiting for the young tour star to win his first major. He was in contention last week and lost in a playoff to J.B. Holmes. Speith also won the Velspar Championship just two weeks ago. You can get Jordan Speith at around 10 to 1 (at JustBet). You’ll find a nice payout for J.B. Holmes as 5 Dimes is offering 50 to 1 odds for last week’s Houston Open Winner.

All the stories of the day will take the early spotlight off the world’s number one player, Rory McIlroy. The current odds to win the Masters for Rory McIlroy is roughly 5 to 1 at most books.

Royal LiverpoolThe third grand slam tournament of the 2014 PGA Tour takes place at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Merseyside, England
for the 154th annual British Open. Phil Mickelson (Current Odds: 17 to 1 @ 5 Dimes). will be looking to defend his 2013 championship, and will need his best effort of the year by far to be in contention. Mickelson, currently ranked 91st in the world, has had a disappointing season by his standards, with no top 10 finishes and an average score of 71 per round. Perhaps the rumors of possible insider trading has somewhat distracted him, and who knows how much that will affect his game in the upcoming months.

This year’s Open Championship may have a different sort of buzz compared to the previous major tournaments this year, and that is due to the return of Tiger Woods (Odds: 17 to 1 @ 5 Dimes). It should come as no surprise that Woods is the favorite, however with his return from injury and past performances this year, one would have to question if he is a serious contender. Woods missed the cut in his return from injury at the Quicken Loans national, and his progress leading up to the British Open should be monitored. His recent struggles shouldn’t matter as the betting public will more than likely have a lot of action on Tiger to be in the mix. It should also be pointed out that the last time Woods won the Open Championship; it was at none other than Royal Liverpool.

British Open Winners (Since 2000)
2013 – Phil Mickelson
2012 – Ernie Els
2011 – Darren Clarke
2010 – Louis Oosthuizen
2009 – Stewart Cink
2008 – Padraig Harrington
2007 – Padraig Harrington
2006 – Tiger Woods
2005 – Tiger Woods
2004 – Todd Hamilton
2003 – Ben Curtis
2002 – Ernie Els
2001 – David Duval
2000 – Tiger Woods

It should come as no surprise that US Open winner Martin Kaymer is listed at only 16 to 1 (at 5Dimes) to win this year’s Open Championship. The 29 year-old German dominated the field at Pinehurst, winning the tournament by an astounding 8 strokes. In 12 tournament appearances, Kaymer has 2 wins and 3 top 10 finishes in 2014. If Kaymer can come anywhere close to duplicating his US Open performance, he will most certainly be a serious contender.

If there is anyone in the field that is due for a major, it’s Sergio Garcia (Best Odds: 25 to 1 at Bovada). Garcia is currently ranked 9th in the world, and despite poor showings in the previous 2 majors, he has 10 top 10 finishes this year, including a 3rd place finish at the Players championship at TPC Sawgrass, and a 2nd place finish at the Travelers Championship. Garcia has been competitive in previous Open championships with 4 top 10 finishes, including placing 2nd in 2007 (Carnoustie) and 5th in 2006 (Royal Liverpool).

California native Rickie Fowler (Best Odds: 50 to 1 at Bovada) is showing some value after a 2nd place finish in the US Open. Fowler has yet to win a major but has shown signs this year that he might be ready to take the next step. Among his 4 top 10 finishes this year was finishing 6 strokes back and placing 5th at the Masters. Fowler did miss the cut in last year’s British Open championship, and will most certainly be determined to put forth a better showing.
