As expected, the 21-year-old Texan, Jordan Speith (Odds: 6 to 1), is listed as the current favorite to win the 2015 Open Championship.   Jordan continues his quest for the holy grail of legendary golf: The true Grand Slam.  Speith was offered to the public at approximately 12 to 1 for the 2015 masters & 8 to 1 for the U.S. Open.  Turns out, these were tremendous values.  At most books his odds for the British jumped after Rory McIlroy’s withdraw due to an ruptured left ankle.  You can still get Jordan currently at 6 to 1 at 5 Dimes Sportsbook.

• Bubba Watson (36 to 1) – Bubba didn’t fair so well in the U.S. Open, but it appeared Chambers Bay wasn’t best suited for his game, as next week he went on to win the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands.
• J.B. Holmes (95 – 1) – We love J.B. this weekend and see 80 to 1 as a bargain.  He’s now ranked 13th in the world.  He now has 5 Top Ten finishes along with a win (at the Shell Houston Open) and two 2nd place finishes in his 24 events played.  The fact that he has played in almost every tournament this year (and made the cut in almost all of them) tells us something.  It shows that this big smasher of the golf ball is in great shape and ready for the trip across the pond.  If J.B. is going to win a major, this is the year he is going to do it.  95 to 1 is a super bargain with Holmes.
• Rickie Fowler (25 to 1) – Nobody is more due to win a major than Rickie in our opinion.  He quietly finished second in 3 of 4 majors last year including a 2nd place finish at the British.  We like him to have a strong showing at St. Andrews.
• Tiger Woods (30 to 1) – This is obviously a sell at 30 to 1 (at least it should be obvious).  He has not been able to put together a very strong weekend yet this year.  If you’re a Tiger fan, 30 to 1 odds may be temping, but you’d be betting with your heart instead of your brain.
• Phil Mickelson (38 to 1) – It seems everyone is a Phil fan and every tournament is always more exciting when the big lefty is in the hunt.  However, believe it or not, Phil hasn’t won a tournament since 2013.  If you are looking for value, it’s probably best to pass on Phil Mickelson unless you can get more than 50 to 1 odds.

The third grand slam tournament of the 2014 PGA Tour takes place at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Merseyside, England for the 154th annual British Open. Phil Mickelson (Current Odds: 17 to 1 @ 5 Dimes). will be looking to defend his 2013 championship, and will need his best effort of the year by far to be in contention. Mickelson, currently ranked 91st in the world, has had a disappointing season by his standards, with no top 10 finishes and an average score of 71 per round. Perhaps the rumors of possible insider trading has somewhat distracted him, and who knows how much that will affect his game in the upcoming months.

This year’s Open Championship may have a different sort of buzz compared to the previous major tournaments this year, and that is due to the return of Tiger Woods (Odds: 17 to 1 @ 5 Dimes). It should come as no surprise that Woods is the favorite, however with his return from injury and past performances this year, one would have to question if he is a serious contender. Woods missed the cut in his return from injury at the Quicken Loans national, and his progress leading up to the British Open should be monitored. His recent struggles shouldn’t matter as the betting public will more than likely have a lot of action on Tiger to be in the mix. It should come as no surprise that US Open winner Martin Kaymer is listed at only 16 to 1 (at 5Dimes) to win this year’s Open Championship. The 29 year-old German dominated the field at Pinehurst, winning the tournament by an astounding 8 strokes. In 12 tournament appearances, Kaymer has 2 wins and 3 top 10 finishes in 2014. If Kaymer can come anywhere close to duplicating his US Open performance, he will most certainly be a serious contender.

If there is anyone in the field that is due for a major, it’s Sergio Garcia (Best Odds: 25 to 1 at Bovada). Garcia is currently ranked 9th in the world, and despite poor showings in the previous 2 majors, he has 10 top 10 finishes this year, including a 3rd place finish at the Players championship at TPC Sawgrass, and a 2nd place finish at the Travelers Championship. Garcia has been competitive in previous Open championships with 4 top 10 finishes, including placing 2nd in 2007 (Carnoustie) and 5th in 2006 (Royal Liverpool).

California native Rickie Fowler (Best Odds: 50 to 1 at Bovada) is showing some value after a 2nd place finish in the US Open. Fowler has yet to win a major but has shown signs this year that he might be ready to take the next step. Among his 4 top 10 finishes this year was finishing 6 strokes back and placing 5th at the Masters. Fowler did miss the cut in last year’s British Open championship, and will most certainly be determined to put forth a better showing.

The 20-year-old definitely has the talent and poise to win a major, and could definitely be among the serious contenders at Pinehurst this year.

Speaking of the Masters, Bubba Watson (US Open Golf Betting Lines: 28 to 1 at BetOnline) is definitely playing at a high level this season, with two wins and six top 10 finishes this season. Watson was inactive for a month after his Masters victory, and his next tournament was a disappointing 48th place finish at TPC Sawgrass. If Tiger Woods (The Players Championship Odds: 6.75 to 1 @ 5Dimes Sportsbook) is in the field, he is going to be the favorite or one of the favorites to win the event. We have seen good things out of Woods thus far this year. He hasn’t played since the 2013 Masters when he finished fourth at -5 in spite of the fact that he didn’t play as well as he truly wanted to. That being said, that’s four Top 5 finishes thus far this year for Woods in just six events played, and he has won three of those four. We’re not quite at the point that Woods is considered the scariest golfer in the world once again at this point, but he certainly has the ability to win each and every time that he is on the course, something that we don’t have the confidence in saying about the mass majority of the golfers that are in this field.

The man that won the Masters this year, Adam Scott (TPC at Sawgrass Odds: 18 to 1 @ 5Dimes Sportsbook) has to be in consideration as well. We knew that Scott was playing well this year before he went to Augusta, and it was great to see the Aussie come away with the emotional win after making some fantastic shots to win his first Green Jacket and the first Green Jacket for his country. Just as this is the first event since the Masters for Woods, it is the first on the PGA Tour for Scott as well. The Australian has only played in five events prior to the TPC, and he hasn’t finished worse than 30th in any of the stroke play events. Scott has three Top 10 finishes and two finishes in the Top 3, and he has had some massive rounds on Saturday and Sunday over the course of this season. The back to back -3s at the Masters was remarkable over the weekend, but perhaps even more impressive was the 64 on the final day of the Cadillac Championship that nearly brought him all the way up for the win.

There is a point that Luke Donald (The Players Championship Lines: 20 to 1 @ 5Dimes Sportsbook) will get back on his feet and contend for one of the major titles on the PGA Tour. He picked up a Top 25 finish at the Masters, but a +2 finish isn’t nearly what he was thinking when he stepped foot on the links at Augusta. He did finish third at the RBC Heritage the week after the Masters. It wasn’t good enough to win, but it was a Top 5 finish, Donald’s second in his last three starts on the PGA. Donald finished sixth last year four shots off of the pace of the winner, and he is going to hope to do the job this week at Sawgrass.

The man that is going to try to defend his title this year at Ponta Vedra is Matt Kuchar (The Players Championship Betting Odds: 30 to 1 @ 5Dimes Sportsbook). No one ever won back to back tournaments here at the TPC, and the closest thing that we have seen is when Jack Nicklaus won in 1974, 1976, and 1978. Kuchar though, has had a special few seasons, and he has to be considered in a running if he can avoid putting the ball in the drink on 17. Kuchar has never won a major tournament title, and last year’s win was an emotional one for sure. His family was on hand for the proceedings, and there was never a doubt that it was the biggest moment in his career. This year, Kuchar won the Accenture Match Play Championship over Hunter Mahan 2 and 1, and he played well at the Masters, finishing tied for eighth. If there is a man to go back to back in the Sunshine State, Kuchar is the man.

It isn’t all that often that we see a golfer come out of nowhere against a relatively strong field to win a tournament on the PGA Tour odds, but that’s what happened last year when the Greenbrier title was taken by Scott Stallings (Defending Greenbrier Classic Champion, Greenbrier Classic Odds: 175 to 1 5Dimes Sportsbook). Of course, the 2011 edition of this tournament wasn’t nearly as popular as it will be this year, as now, it serves as a great prep tourney for the British Open, which is only a couple weeks down the line from here. This is also now a part of the FedEx Cup, which a number of golfers take quite seriously as we head towards the back end of the PGA Tour campaign. Still, Stallings is going to be back, and he is going to be doing so after taking his first, and only PGA Tour title last year here in West Virginia after winning a thrilling three-man playoff.

This figures to be one of the last tournaments that Tiger Woods (The Greenbrier Classic PGA Odds: 3.60 @ 5 Dimes Sportsbook) is going to play before getting ready for the third major of the year. This is actually going to be the first time that Woods has played at the Greenbrier Classic, but there are a number of golfers that can say just that with the tournament now taking place in July and not in August. Woods didn’t play all that well at the Masters or at the US Open, but he is really coming around once again to being one of the best golfers in the world. The scores are expected to be awfully low here at the Greenbrier Classic, knowing that a 59 was shot here just two years ago, when it took a -22 score to get the job done. Woods was able to win a tournament like this at the Arnold Palmer Invitational this year, and if he can figure out how to shoot four rounds in the high-60s to low-70s, there’s no reason to think that he can’t compete for the title in his first go around at the Old White TPC, especially after last week’s remarkable run for another tournament championship.

This is also a tournament that we are expecting Phil Mickelson (Odds to Win Greenbrier Classic: 20 to 1 @ 5Dimes Sportsbook) to perform well at. Mickelson was here last year, but he was one of the few big names to partake in the event. Lefty actually missed the cut, shooting a 70 and a 73 in the first two rounds. Of course, as we came to find out, Mickelson was in the midst of a great run at the major tournaments, finishing second at the British Open and then finishing tied for 19th at the PGA Championship, so one might consider this to be quite the spot for him to open up once again. Mickelson is in a similar spot now, except that he is coming right off of the US Open and headed across the pond, and not the other way around with the trip to the PGA still coming months down the road. It feels like quite some time since Mickelson’s last win at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, but since that point, he has come close and finished in the Top 10 a whopping four other times, including finishing third at this year’s Masters.

It was a rough month of June for Zach Johnson (Odds to Win The Greenbrier Classic: 20 to 1 @ 5Dimes Sportsbook), but this could be the spot where he turns things around this year. Johnson didn’t make the cut at the FedEx St. Jude Classic to start his month, and he followed that up with some disastrous rounds at the US Open, finishing at +11. This is going to be the first time that Johnson plays at the Greenbrier in his career, and we can count on him for what should be some low scores, as he finally gets those rounds back in the 60s on a more consistent basis. This could be a golfer that is a bit of a longshot on the PGA odds to make a case at heading to the winner’s circle this week.
