As always, anywhere he goes, Tiger Woods (Current Bridgestone Invitational Odds: 4.45 to 1 @ 5Dimes Sportsbook is going to be the man of the hour. The last we saw of Woods, he finished +2 at the Open Championship. It was good enough to finish tied for sixth, but it wasn’t good enough to capture that elusive major tournament title. Woods though, is playing some sound golf right now. He hasn’t won since the Players Championship back in May, but he has only played in three events since that point. Woods was awful at the Memorial Tournament, but since that point, he played well at both the US Open and the Open Championship. We have to think that there is at least a one in four chance that he is going to ultimately find a way to rule the day here in Akron, where he has won seven times before.

We aren’t a big Lefty fan right now, knowing that Phil Mickelson is overhyped at 14 to 1 after his big win at the Open Championship. That said, we do still like the man that is the third choice on the board, the Aussie, Adam Scott (Current Bridgestone Invitational Betting Lines: 18 to 1 @ 5Dimes Sportsbook. Scott won the Masters and finished third at the Open Championship, and there is a real chance that he is due for another win here in Akron. The Australian born golfer really hasn’t had a miserable tournament this year, and we think that he is going to get another win somewhere along the way over the course of the rest of the season. This is a venue in which he has won before, taking down the Bridgestone Invitational in 2011, and that has to give him some confidence to be able to come back and get the job done once again this year.

It would be awfully poetic if Hunter Mahan (Current Bridgestone Invitational Odds: 25 to 1 @ 5Dimes Sportsbook ultimately ended up winning this tournament this week. Mahan of course, made headline news when he walked off the course at last week’s RBC Canadian Open to be with his wife for the birth of their child. At the time, Mahan was -13 and playing the best golf that he had played all season long. It had to be a tough decision to walk away from what could have been a few hundred grand at least, but Mahan gets all the credit in the world. Now, it’s off to a relatively similar golf course here in Akron, and there is going to be a great opportunity to score a few more low rounds. Just like the rest of the men that we have listed here for this tournament, Mahan has a history of winning the Bridgestone Invitational, having done so in 2010. Maybe the time is here for him to get lucky and post a second straight amaizng tournament in a row to claim glory.

The Tiger Woods Foundation is set to host its annual AT&T National at Congressional Country Club, the site of the 2011 US Open for PGA betting fanatics and aficionados alike. The most recent defending champion of this event that is going to be playing starting on Thursday is Nick Watney (AT&T National Odds: 50 to 1 @ SportBet Sportsbook). This isn’t a bad price that on a golfer that has a good history on this golf course, but the form that Watney is in has been terrible. He finished 95th, 116th, and 89th in his last three tournaments, missing the cut in all three tournaments. In fact, over the course of his last nine rounds, he hasn’t put together better than a 70, a number that he broke in six of his prior seven rounds before that point. Watney might be worth considering, but it’s going to take a huge turnaround from what we have seen of late to get him into the winner’s circle this week.

If you’re looking for someone in good form though, the man that you might want to back is Billy Horschel (Odds To Win The AT&T National: 22 to 1 @ SportBet Sportsbook). Very quietly, Horschel has had a great season. He won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans back in the end of April, and he has now logged back to back Top 10 finishes, including finishing tied for fourth at the US Open. This is a very similar type of course to the one at the FedEx St. Jude Classic which Horschel played the week before the US Open though, and he finished tied for 10th in that event. You wouldn’t normally place a bet on a golfer like Horschel, but we have to think that there is at least a 1 in 20 chance that he is going to walk away with the title against a field that is relatively weak in nature.

Hunter Mahan (AT&T National Lines: 17 to 1 @ SportBet Sportsbook) could be in for a nice week as well. He is the third favorite on the golf betting lines this week, and we actually recommended playing him in this tournament last year. He finished tied for eighth against a significantly better field on a course that played very tough that week. Of course, that’s nothing new for Mahan this year. He finished fourth at the US Open by shooting +5 at Meridian, and he followed that up last week by taking 24th at the Travelers Championship. Mahan continues to put together reasonable performance after reasonable performance, and though he hasn’t won this year, he has the disposition to finish things off this week and get that elusive win.

If Tiger Woods (The Players Championship Odds: 6.75 to 1 @ 5Dimes Sportsbook) is in the field, he is going to be the favorite or one of the favorites to win the event. We have seen good things out of Woods thus far this year. He hasn’t played since the 2013 Masters when he finished fourth at -5 in spite of the fact that he didn’t play as well as he truly wanted to. That being said, that’s four Top 5 finishes thus far this year for Woods in just six events played, and he has won three of those four. We’re not quite at the point that Woods is considered the scariest golfer in the world once again at this point, but he certainly has the ability to win each and every time that he is on the course, something that we don’t have the confidence in saying about the mass majority of the golfers that are in this field.

The man that won the Masters this year, Adam Scott (TPC at Sawgrass Odds: 18 to 1 @ 5Dimes Sportsbook) has to be in consideration as well. We knew that Scott was playing well this year before he went to Augusta, and it was great to see the Aussie come away with the emotional win after making some fantastic shots to win his first Green Jacket and the first Green Jacket for his country. Just as this is the first event since the Masters for Woods, it is the first on the PGA Tour for Scott as well. The Australian has only played in five events prior to the TPC, and he hasn’t finished worse than 30th in any of the stroke play events. Scott has three Top 10 finishes and two finishes in the Top 3, and he has had some massive rounds on Saturday and Sunday over the course of this season. The back to back -3s at the Masters was remarkable over the weekend, but perhaps even more impressive was the 64 on the final day of the Cadillac Championship that nearly brought him all the way up for the win.

There is a point that Luke Donald (The Players Championship Lines: 20 to 1 @ 5Dimes Sportsbook) will get back on his feet and contend for one of the major titles on the PGA Tour. He picked up a Top 25 finish at the Masters, but a +2 finish isn’t nearly what he was thinking when he stepped foot on the links at Augusta. He did finish third at the RBC Heritage the week after the Masters. It wasn’t good enough to win, but it was a Top 5 finish, Donald’s second in his last three starts on the PGA. Donald finished sixth last year four shots off of the pace of the winner, and he is going to hope to do the job this week at Sawgrass.

The man that is going to try to defend his title this year at Ponta Vedra is Matt Kuchar (The Players Championship Betting Odds: 30 to 1 @ 5Dimes Sportsbook). No one ever won back to back tournaments here at the TPC, and the closest thing that we have seen is when Jack Nicklaus won in 1974, 1976, and 1978. Kuchar though, has had a special few seasons, and he has to be considered in a running if he can avoid putting the ball in the drink on 17. Kuchar has never won a major tournament title, and last year’s win was an emotional one for sure. His family was on hand for the proceedings, and there was never a doubt that it was the biggest moment in his career. This year, Kuchar won the Accenture Match Play Championship over Hunter Mahan 2 and 1, and he played well at the Masters, finishing tied for eighth. If there is a man to go back to back in the Sunshine State, Kuchar is the man.

PGA Tour betting action is set to embark on its biggest four weeks of the year. The FedEx Cup starts this Thursday with the Barclays Tournament, the first of four tournaments that will determine this year’s winner of golf’s equivalent of the playoffs. The top 125 ranked golfers in the world will get a chance to compete at the Ridgewood Country Club this weekend, but the field will get whittled down to just 30 golfers that will get to play in the finale of the FedEx Cup, The Tour Championship.

The first man to clearly keep an eye on in this event is the recently divorced, Tiger Woods (+1500 @ Sportsbook.com). Woods is going to play in this week’s tournament at the Barclays just days after finalizing his divorce with ex-wife Elin, which should finally put to rest all of these other marital issues that have gotten in the way of his golf in recent months. Woods won the FedEx Cup in 2007 and 2009 and has earned nearly double what any other man has in this four week tournament in its three years in existence. However, Woods has a major issue right now, and that’s that he has been playing very poor golf in recent weeks. Tiger enters this tournament as just the 112th ranked player in the 2010 FedEx Cup, making him a bit of a dark horse, per se to try to survive in this tournament through to its conclusion.

The man in the lead right now in the FedEx Cup points standings is Ernie Els (+600 @ Sportsbook.com). Els has been leading this competition since early March, but he has missed a pair of cuts in recent tournaments and has also been on a bit of a cold run of late. The South African also hasn’t performed that well in this tournament in its history, as he isn’t even the top man from his home country in career earnings. Rory Sabbatini is. Still, Els’ wins this year at the World Golf Championship and the Arnold Palmer Invitational aren’t to be ignored.

The ever so consistent Jim Furyk (+1000 @ Sportsbook.com) has been on fire on the PGA Tour of late, as ten of his last 12 rounds of golf have been shot under par. Furyk has a pair of wins this year at the Transitions Championship and the Verizon Heritage, and he is almost certain to make The Tour Championship with numbers like that on his side. Furyk has never been a huge factor in the FedEx Cup, but this year could prove to be an incredible exception.

The Masters winner, Phil Mickelson (+500 @ Sportsbook.com) is the favorite to capture the FedEx Cup, though. Unfortunately for Lefty, he has yet to capture another tournament this year. In fact, he hasn’t had a Top 10 finish in an event since the middle of June and has even struggled just to make some cut lines. Mickelson has had good showing after good showing here at the FedEx Cup though. However, the elusive FedEx Cup victory is still eluding him in spite of the fact that he finished third in 2007 and second in 2009. He has earned a cool $5.7M in three years in this event.

Perhaps the best option might be The Field (+125 @ Sportsbook.com), though. A number of red hot golfers are in this bunch that are certainly ones to watch. Matt Kuchar has the most Top 10 finishes on tour this year with nine, and he ranks in the Top 25 in seemingly every major category. Bo Van Pelt is considered a huge dark horse, as he clearly has the talent to come out of nowhere just as Camilo Villegas did two years ago to challenge for the FedEx Cup title. Kevin Sutherland will be one to watch as well. He has 14 cashes this season and leads the PGA Tour in greens in regulation, which is crucial to success in all four of these tournaments, particularly the first here at the Barclays.

The Players Championship at Sawgrass in Ponta Vedra, FL started on Thursday afternoon, and plenty of questions surround the event.

The most notable is how Tiger Woods will do following his missing the cut with two brutal rounds of golf at the Quail Hollow Championship in his most recent appearance. Tiger’s most recent round of golf before coming to the TPC at Sawgrass was that woeful 79 at Quail Hollow in Round 2. Many felt as though Woods, who was only playing in his second event since returning to the course from his domestic disputes, was rusty and/or showing signs of decay in his game. However, no such rust was evident in the 2001 TPC champ in Round 1 on Thursday, as he shot two under par to finish the day four shots off of the pace.

That pace has been set by relative unknown J.B. Holmes and Robert Allenby, both of which fired -6 66s on the day. Holmes has only won on one golf course in his career on the PGA Tour, with that coming at the FBR Open. It’s a tournament that he has won twice, once in 2006 and once in 2008. Allenby, a veteran on the tour, hasn’t won an event since the 2001 Marconi Pennsylvania Classic. He has four career tour titles.

Eight golfers, including Kenny Perry, are tied at -5 for third place. There were 103 golfers that shot par or better on a day in which scores were very low at the TPC.

Phil Mickelson has an opportunity to become the #1 ranked golfer in the world if he can win this event, and he has gotten off to a great start as well, shooting a two under par to be tied with Tiger and a host of others in 37th position.

Last year’s champion of this event, Henrik Stenson shot a -3 69 to finish Round 1 in a great position just three shots off of the pace. There aren’t many multiple time winners at the TPC, as there are only five golfers that have ever pulled off the feat. Jack Nicklaus is the only man that has won three tournaments here at the TPC, while Fred Couples, Steve Elkington, Davis Love III, and Hal Sutton are the others. Love shot -3 today and is the only multiple time winner that is playing in this event.

There are quite a few golfers that can join this elite list of multiple time winners at Sawgrass, including both Mickelson and Woods. 2006 champion Sergio Garcia went -3 on the day, while ’06 winner Stephen Ames is at -2 through 18 holes.

Tiger Woods is really getting under my skin right now, and for various reasons. Not only am I irked that the entire PGA Tour betting event this week at the Masters was covered by Tiger this and Tiger that, but I also hate how everyone said that Woods couldn’t figure out how to put this together after taking six months away from the Tour. He’s still Tiger Freaking Woods. No, Tiger didn’t win it on Sunday, but he sure had his dramatic moments to finish just a few shots behind and with yet another Top 10 finish in a major. That being said, I’m still ticked that everyone spent so much time talking about Tiger that there were two stories that just totally went under the radar. Good thing that Phil Mickelson won the event, or no one would’ve ever remembered the name of the winner. I mean really… why not just give Tiger the Green Jacket, too? After all, he was the center of this whole ordeal these past four days, right? And why no love for 16-year old Matteo Manassero, who made the cut and finished at +4 for the tournament? If this kid can finish +4 at the age of 16 and make the Masters cut, maybe there’s another Tiger Woods on our hands that we’ll be discussing in a few years.

A week into MLB betting action and we already have a little bit of history… and not the good kind either. How’s about allowing a whopping 13 runs in an inning? Nice job, Pittsburgh Pirates. The 13 run outburst featured eight hits, four walks, three homers (one of which was to Edwin Jackson, the pitcher, who spent the last couple seasons in the American League), a triple, and a tad bit of miserable fielding to boot. It took three pitchers to get through the frame for the Bucs, as Darren McCutchen, Hayden Penn, and Jack Taschner were all used and all touched up. If you’re interested, through one week of play, McCutchen has an ERA of 24.30 and Penn has one of 30.86. Stellar ball, guys. Stellar.

Let’s take a stab at the Boston Celtics as well. Just a week after watching the San Antonio Spurs get destroyed by the New Jersey Nets, the C’s pulled off one just as sharp. In the fight for the #3 seed in the Eastern Conference, they were knocked off by the lowly Washington Wizards on their home court 106-96. Even more embarrassing was the fact that they put up 42 points in the 4th quarter and still were beaten and beaten badly. The Wiz outscored Boston 52-31 in a very uninspired first half of ball. Over their L/52 games, the Celtics are only 27-25 after starting 18 games over .500 over the first couple months of the year. That won’t cut it in the playoffs, that’s for sure.
